The Department of History is proud to offer four Fall Intensive Session courses. The topics range from the Civil Rights Movement; Christmas; post-WW1; and Universal Basic Income.

The College of Arts and Sciences is offering a special selection of 1- and 2-credit classes during this session. Fall Intensive Session courses will take place from November 30 — December 20, 2020. These courses will count as electives within the College of Arts and Sciences.

**COLL-X 311 - Freedom Summer 1964.** *2 credits with Professor Alex Lichtenstein.*

The best way to understand the past is to pretend to go there. Using a role-playing game, students recreate a crucial moment in the history of the 1960s civil rights movement: Freedom Summer. Students playing historical roles negotiate, deliberate, debate, and lead real-life scenarios based on the interracial movement to end white supremacy in Mississippi. Can Blacks and whites work together for change? Is non-violence possible? What compromises should be made to demand democracy? In this course, you will collectively seek answers to these questions, while learning about the history of this important social movement.

Why has Christmas persistently produced strange, passionate conflicts from Colonial America to the present? Emphasizing the interaction of religion, capitalism, social diversity, and politics, this course focuses on the evolving observance of Christmas in material culture (presents, trees, and lights), media (literature, popular music, and film), and public space (rowdyism, parades, and nativity scenes).
Class meetings will include nine video lectures. Assigned primary sources include: Puritan sermons and laws, 19th-21st-century newspaper & magazine articles, diaries, photographs, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, film clips, & a feature film of students’ choice.

Immediately after the First World War, most European countries were democracies; twenty years later, on the eve of the Second World War, a majority of European governments were authoritarian, and European democracy seemed almost extinct. This course will examine the twenty year period in Europe between the First and Second World Wars and will explore the ideological battles that enabled the rise of Nazism and Stalinism, led to the start of the Second World War, and nearly doomed democracy.

In Picturing Indians: Native Americans in Film, 1941-1960, Liza Black presents a vivid portrait of the complicated experiences of Native actors on the sets of midcentury Hollywood Westerns. This behind-the-scenes look at costuming, makeup, contract negotiations, and union disparities uncovers an all-too-familiar narrative of racism and further complicates filmmakers' choices to follow mainstream representations of "Indianness".

IU History Ph.D. Sarah B. Rowley (2015) recently published an editorial in the Washington Post's "Made In History" series entitled "America might be ready for Kamala Harris’s husband to be second gentleman". Dr. Rowley is an assistant professor of history at DePauw University. She is the author of "Married Congresswomen and the New Breed of Political Husbands in 1970s Political Culture," in "Suffrage at 100: Women in American Politics since 1920" (Johns Hopkins University Press).
